Give Soldiers Their Due

Posted by Adam Graham on August 18, 2005

From Worldnetdaily we have this incredible story of a retruning soldier denied Texas in-state tuition rates when returning from two tours of duty in Iraq.

Carl Basham says he was shocked when personnel at Austin Community College told him a few weeks ago that he didn’t qualify as a Texas resident “for tuition purposes.” Basham was born in Beeville, Texas, registered to vote in Travis County in 1998, holds a Texas driver’s license and does his banking in Austin, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported.

I’m just speechless at this stupidity. Thankfully the Texas State Comptoller and the legislature are getting involved in this. Soldiers should not be penalized for serving their country.

Everywhere In Mexico…They’re Coming to America

Posted by Adam Graham on August 18, 2005

There’s talk on the left about the need to be compassionate, to welcome illegal immigrants. The left believes that we have to do nothing, because to stop people from invading our country illegally is racist.

Well, according to the Tuscon Citizen 40% of Mexican citizens want to come to America. That’s 42 million people across the border into the country or 21 million if only those who are willing to cross illegally come.

Simply put, its nothing against Mexicans, but the borders have to be controlled. We cannot handle the huge rush of Mexicans and Guatamalans across the Southwestern border of the United States. Its a huge burden on our social welfare system. Its been a burden on law enforcement, and if it continues it will bankrupt our country.

There’s also a cultural element to this and that is that there’s no time for assimilation. Traditionally, its taken a generation or two for families to fully assimilate into the American way of life. What’s happening is that tens of millions of people are coming through, not becoming part of the culture, but rather establishing their own sub-culture. The nation can’t absorb everybody who’d like to be here. A culture with a lot of people who don’t fit, and aren’t part of it puts us in the same boat of Canada with Quebecers. That’s why stopping the flood of illegals and giving our nation time and space to assimilate the mass of immigrants through a structured immigration process is going to be the answer.

Parental Rights Matter

Posted by Adam Graham on August 18, 2005

The AP has a story of two of an Appeals Court ruling that makes sense:

A judge who ordered two Wicca believers to shield their son from their “non-mainstream” faith overstepped his authority, an appeals court said Wednesday in dismissing the order…

Its not the job of the courts to define what religion is mainstream and what isn’t. I think that had the ruling been allowed to stand, it would have been a dangerous precedent. Its a parents job to determine their children’s religious upbringing not the court’s. So, despite my disagreements with Wiccans, they have the right to raise their children like anybody else.

No Post Tonight

Sadly, tonight’s edition of the Adam Graham program is being called off due to technical difficulties with Audio Blogger, which has not been working since I tried to use it an hour ago. I’ll try and get something done tomorrow.
