Oops, Robertson Puts People’s Life At Risk

Posted by Adam Graham on August 27, 2005

Christianity Today has a whole different perspective on this Hugo Chavez situation:

A senior representative of American evangelicals has requested to meet Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez for extreme comments made by television evangelist Pat Robertson, who has been overwhelmingly criticised over the past week for his comments to “assassinate” the Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez…

The President of the National Association of Evangelicals, Rev Ted Haggard has said that he is now seeking a meeting with Mr Chavez to distance US Christians from the remarks.

Currently, Haggard is in Mexico meeting a friend of Mr Chavez, and if his request is successful he will travel to Caracas in a meeting to reconcile the rift that has arisen between the Venezuelan premier and the US evangelicals.

According to the BBC, Mr Haggard says he wants to secure assurances from Mr Chavez about the safety of American evangelical missionaries working in Venezuela.

I guess I’d not looked at in this way, but they’ve got a point. For a secular commentator like say Ann Coulter, I think the comment would be somewhat tolerable. But Christianity is a global religion, and if you start theorizing on assassination, its going to hurt people over in the countries where someone like Hugo Chavez or Saddam Hussein could take out their dictatorial anger on a lot of innocent people.

I’ve got to say something else. I think this whole thing has really struck an unfair blow to CBN’s news division which is superb. CBN news does a great job uncovering stories you didn’t hear in the mainstream news. I’d tune into the first 20 minutes of the 700 Club back in the 1990s to get the straight dish on a variety of issues. People like Lee Weeb have always been great professionals. Robertson’s comments are the networks biggest liability, unfortunately.

Way to Go, Genius

Posted by Adam Graham on August 27, 2005

Well Ariel Sharon’s decision to rip the Jews in Gaza out was brilliant and is already producing results. As evidenced by this statement from a Hamas official.

Mohammed Deif praised Israel’s withdrawal from the Gaza Strip as a victory for armed resistance, rejected calls for his group to disarm, and vowed to continue attacks on Israel until the Jewish state is erased from the map.

But maybe another conession would work? Surely if you gave them Half of Jerusalem that would solve it. Well maybe all of Jerusalem. Heck, why not give them Tel Aviv? Heck, we’ll have peace if we give them all of Israel-excuse me, Palestine and then we’ll have peace.

Can you say regime change? Calling Benjamin Netanyahu.
