Praise for the Legislature, Boos for the Legislature

Posted by Adam Graham on April 2, 2007

The Idahoan points out the positives of the Idaho Legislature:

1. Unlike the Congress, Idaho’s lawmakers meet just for a few months out of the year. Then they go home to their real jobs.

Elliot Werk excepted, but yeah. I think it’s good that it’s a temporary gig. I’d like it to be a tad more temporary (term limits, please) but as much as I gripe about the legislatures, they are better than the rascals that are running the House now. And yes, we do owe them a debt of gratitude. The Legislators works hard, long hours for little pay, and for the vast majority of them, their political “career” ends right in the legislature. We think of all the legislators who go up for bigger and better things, but that’s the exception not the rule. Of course, there are crooked legislators, stubborn ones, and the like. Then there are decent ones who work hard. Sometimes, we criticize them, too. If they know their job. They understand, taking flack is part of it.

Meanwhile, Randy Stapilus points out that the Statesman’s poll on the election shows the plurality giving the legislature an “F.” Thus proving the liberalism of Statesman site readers. Personally, I gave them a “C.” While, they did much good, they did some harm and the most important issue (i.e. grocery tax relief) was left on the table.

Let the Biennial Drubbing Begin Early

Posted by Adam Graham on April 2, 2007

According to 43rd State Blues political prognosticator Tom Paine, former Congressman and Lieutenant Governor candidate Larry LaRocco is set to announce for US Senate.

According to Paine, apparently LaRocco hasn’t had enough after losing by more than 80,000 vote last time (and being the only Statewide Democratic candidate to lose Ada County.) LaRocco an incredibly unhinged campaign that showed how low a once-successful politician could go, with campaign commercials that were more unintentionally silly than pursuasive.

Sad thing is that if LaRocco runs, he’ll be the frontrunner for the Dems. Even Robert Vasquez could clean his clock.

Idaho Conservative Scorecard

Posted by Adam Graham on April 2, 2007

If you happened to wonder what I was doing all day, I’ve just completed, the Idaho Conservative scorecard. Now, everyone can find out how their legislators voted this past session.

My legislatures in district 18 rated as follows:

Senator Kate Kely (D.)-14%
Rep. Branden Durst (D.)-33% (2nd most conservative Democrat in the House.)
Rep. Phyllis King (D.)-0% (A little far to the left, I’d say.)

Go to the Idaho Conservative and find out how your representatives stack up.

Blog Idaho linked to it and Right Mind provided his opinion of his two GOP legislators scoring a 33 and a 29% (with appropriate graphic, and it was covered in the Idaho Values Alliance newsletter.

Trish and Halli declare the scorecard “amazing” in a nice write-up. The Idahoan opines, “The bottom line is, this survey accomplishes a wonderful thing — it gives the reader a broad look at the philosophical underpinnings of each legislator. And it does so in a form that we can’t remember ever being utilized in Idaho until today.”

He also points out one issue that probably should have been included (the expansion of government education for kids 3 and up.) and wasn’t.
