Don’t Let Them Win

Posted by Adam Graham on June 10, 2007

The following is a commentary from the Truth and Hope Report Weekend update by Democratic Political Dave Screwtape

The conservative grassroots is celebrating the death of the comprehensive immigration reform bill. This is a dangerous situation. Conservatives have spent much of the year angry, dispirited, and discontented: exactly the position we want them to be in. Anything close to victory or exultation must be avoided.

For starters, it falls to Democrats to return to the table and work out a compromise that still includes a path to citizenship, dare I say, amnesty! We must have the support of corporately-minded Republicans in the Senate and House. It may seem odd, but in this debate, we and big business Republicans both have a stake in this bill.

For us, it’s an opportunity to create a permanent voting block. For them, it’s an opportunity to please their corporate masters by providing them a steady supply of cheap labor. Everyone wins in the short term, and we will dominate politics for the next half century once the wave of poor and poorly educated immigrants join our nation’s citizenry.

It’s important that this be done now. If we can get a bill that includes amnesty through Congress, we will have a delightful time watching the GOP implode for the next election. The GOP will split in two and we will roll to the first of many victories in November, 2008.

Proper steps must be taken to insure this happens. First, have Republicans out front on this bill. Senator Lindsay Graham (R-SC.) has claimed the mantle as amnesty’s best friend and I see no reason to seize it. Having him out front gives the anti-immigration forces a clear GOP face. Also when it comes time for the House to vote, our goal should be a vote of 217-216 in favor. Allow members who would be endangered by supporting the bill to vote “no” to lessen the impact to our party.

The goal is to insure that anti-immigration groups (and organized labor) can’t blame us for the bill. If you want to blame someone, it’s all the President’s fault. If we fail to get this done now and get a Democratic President to go along with Congress, we’ll have a hard time blaming the Republicans. This highlights a key lesson I learned in the early 1990s with the First President Bush’s tax increase. If you and a Republican agree on an unpopular measure: blame the measure on the Republican.

We do have a couple factors in our favor on this issue. First, we have those folks who will become lazy and apathetic and let the pressure off Washington now that the amnesty has been temporarily avoided. This will allow money and special interest groups to place the pressure back on to get a bill done.

Secondly, we’ll have those who will fail to realize they won a victory. Such was the case in the 2006 election. The House and Senate Republicans came to a stalemate over comprehensive immigration reform and many people in favor of enforcing the border became angry and pledged to never support another Republican.
Of course, these folks might have considered that building a fence was the most Congress could do for their cause with Bush in office. The resultant increase in the Democratic seats in Congress allowed amnesty to have a chance of coming into being.

Third, we’re lucky to have people who are unable to come up with a constructive solution. Resigning their party and pledging never to support a Republican again are just a few ways in which anti-immigration folks marginalize themselves and guarantee that.

Given the presence of such characteristics in the anti-immigrant crowd, our task of defeating nationalists is important, but not all that difficult. The anti-immigration people will take care of half the job for us.

Amnesty Yes!

Posted by Adam Graham on June 10, 2007

No, not for illegal immigration, but for Baseball, Mark Kriegel writes:

The time has come for Commissioner Bud Selig to grant amnesty to the ballplayers who used performance enhancing drugs prior to the establishment of the Major League testing policy.

It’s the best, and perhaps at this point, only way for baseball to deal credibly with its long-running steroid scandal…

The home run records are tainted. They will remain tainted, asterisk or not, as there is no mathematical formula to factor out the influence of deca durabolin, stanozolol, or any of the BALCO balms. The crime has been committed. And it wasn’t just the players who got away with it, but the industry itself. There’s plenty of blame to be shared among the players, the owners, the media, the union and, of course, the commissioner who didn’t want to know anything until it was too late.

But Selig, unlike any other party in this scenario, is sworn to uphold the best interests of the game. He needs to get to the truth — or some reasonable approximation of the truth — and he needs a resolution.

Really, now, how much longer can this go on?…

There was no Major League Baseball rule against this (thus the difference with illegal immigration by the way) but there was a federal law against, and the statute of limitations has run out on most of it. What’s past has got to be buried and the idea that we’re going to punish players for something everybody knew was going on at the time time is absurd.

Do You Need a Corded Phone?

Posted by Adam Graham on June 10, 2007

Apparently, there’s an interesting debate going on between cell phone companies and Qwest. Methinks, both have some ulterior motives, but decide for yourself. My wife and I have both LAN and Cell.

Calling the Statesman Out

Posted by Adam Graham on June 10, 2007

My letter correcting the Statesman’s editorial on Vote by Mail ran yesterday:

The Statesman is confused on the vote-by-mail bill. It argues that the bill deserves consideration, as we need to allow people the opportunity to vote by mail to increase voter turnout while stating that they don’t want to get rid of voting on election day.

Has the Statesman read the vote-by-mail bill? The opening section of H. 94 would give the county clerk the right with permission of the board of commission to “conduct all primary, special, and general elections entirely by a vote by mail system.” Thus this bill would eliminate in-person voting, which the Statesman claims to oppose.

What are we to do when those who are charged with informing us are misinformed? It was Christ who stated, “If the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.” So don’t rely on the Statesman’s opinions to form your own.

As the community college campaign illustrated, anyone who wants an absentee ballot can get one already. Certainly, early voting could be expanded to include a variety of locations and more days. However, don’t rush to support vote by mail, which compromises the secret ballot and opens the process to massive fraud.

Nancy Pelosi’s Blasphemy

Posted by Adam Graham on June 10, 2007

Of destroying embryos for medical research, Nancy Pelosi declares:

“Science is a gift of God to all of us and science has taken us to a place that is biblical in its power to cure. And that is the embryonic stem cell research.”

So Atom bombs are also a gift from God. After all, science produced them. What about guns? A scientists had to develop them. Or barbed wire, or machine guns, are these all gifts from God? What about date rape drugs and LSD are those gifts from God.

Science is not God. Science can be used for good or ill and to draw God in as an advocate of the destruction of innocent human life shows a poor understanding of scripture to say the least.

Idaho has its second blogging legislator, Marv Hagedorn (R-20) (IC Rating: 100%), he joins Branden Durst (D-18) (IC : 33%).

It’s good to conservatives into the blogosphere and hopefully there will be more to follow.

Congress Ignoring Reality on Stem Cell Research

Posted by Adam Graham on June 10, 2007

Three separate studies show that we can obtain stem cells that have just as much potential as Embryonic Stem Cell Research. Despite the Science, Congress has gone ahead and approved funding for ESCR. Why? It’s about making abortion a virtue in our society.

That’s our top story on the Truth and Hope Report. We also talk about the success of charter schools and why public schools aren’t picking up best practices. It has something to do with not admitting they need help, and district schools definitely don’t want to admit they need to be more like charters.

Also, a recent story pointed out that 19th Century Anti-Catholic Bigotry is causing problems for the school choice movement? How do you give a voucher for parents to send their kids to religious schools if your State Constitution forbids funds to religious schools? We provide the answer tonight.

Also, we talk about Romney’s squishy answer on same sex marriage. There’s no need to be derogatory but with answers that are weak and swishy will not help conservatives obtain victory for traditional marriage. Hat Tip: Right-o-Meter

Jim Wallis has a realization: “politics alone can’t solve poverty.” Sadly, this shows how Liberal his theology really is that this is a revelation. Hat Tip: Evangelical Outpost

A Reuters story tells the truth that many liberals wish to avoid: We are a religious people and religion has a large say in politics because Church and State are not conjoined. The way some people make a huge deal out of a Christmas Tree or a Nativity Scene, or a Ten Commandments monument, you’d think that America was Sweden. ‘Fraid not.

Then we cover a story from the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals as they tell the Boise Rescue Mission what they can do with their own building that they purchased from the city and that they just paid $44,000 for a sewer hook up on. The folks at Community House who managed to run the shelter into the ground have a chance to reclaim it, because under the leadership of the Boise Rescue mission, the shelter was actually doing some good in the community. Thank goodness, we have federal courts to stop that.

Also, a liberal feminist decries pornography and its effect on women. Is that really compatible with the sexual revolution? I don’t think so.

Tony Campolo calls fellow liberals on the carpet for their hypocrisy in condemning conservative churches for political statements while the same thing goes on in liberal churches. Hey, that’s great, but I’ll do you one better. How about the government doesn’t tell any church what they can say and do. I know the idea of letting people speak freely is revolutionary to the left. But it’s based on something I like to call…The First Amendment!

Finally, I discuss the most important news of our lifetime. Yep, Paris Hilton’s DUI and the related fiasco. I have a very different perspective than has been expressed thousands of times in other places. Imagine thinking about something in a different way. Wow, that’s even more revolutionary than the First Amendment.
