I Can’t Blame Her

Posted by Adam Graham on June 26, 2005

The London Telegraph has a story about a woman in Spain:

Antonio Cosme Velasco Soriano, 69, had been sent to jail for nine years in 1998, but was let out on a three-day pass and returned to his home town of Benejúzar, 30 miles south of Alicante, on the Costa Blanca.

While there, he passed his victim’s mother in the street and allegedly taunted her about the attack. He is said to have called out “How’s your daughter?”, before heading into a crowded bar.

Shortly after, the woman walked into the bar, poured a bottle of petrol over Soriano and lit a match. She watched as the flames engulfed him, before walking out.

At her arraignment she was cheered and understandably so. This guy was a perv who’d raped her daughter and as a result she’d had years of mental problems. The biggest one to blame here is the prison system for putting this guy on Furlough.

As for the woman, this definitely wasn’t first degree murder. I don’t know Spanish law, but under British law, the worst this could be is Voluntary Manslaughter, but I don’t think she was in a right state of mind based on her past history of mental illness, so she might even be able to plead insanity.
