Chairman Stallings: A Voice of Honesty and Sanity

Posted by Adam Graham on May 22, 2006

Julie at Red State Rebels posted excerpts of an e-mail from Chairman Richard Stallings who offers some honest and wise advice to Democrats:

Now, it’s come to my attention that some people, especially a few media pundits, have been urging Democrats vote in the Republican primary. I understand it may be tempting for some people, but that’s not the way our system is designed to work. We as Democrats have a duty to go to the polls and choose the strongest Democratic ticket possible. My good friend Cecil Andrus had it right when he said:

“Let the Republicans pluck their own chickens!”

Now, I think he hits the obvious. First of all, I do think that he says this out of a sense of genuine honor and respect for the primary process. Stallings, for those who don’t remember received 3 delegate votes at the Democratic National Convention in 1988 from National Right-to-Life. So he’s a moderate Democrats whose actually won elections in Idaho.

He understands the basic political facts as well. A relevant party doesn’t try and pick the other party’s candidate, it picks its own. This is particularly dangerous if you follow Bill Cope’s advice. The Boise Weekly columnist said he’d vote for Shelia Sorensen because she was the strongest Republican in the race because odds are were Republicans would hold the seat. Thus, Democrats doing that get into a concession state of mind rather than a victory one.

Even sabotage is bad, because it could blow up in your face if your opponent actually wins. While, its true that Robert Vasquez comess off nuts in the most recent debate, he doesn’t come off much worse than Jim Trafficant who served several terms in Congress before his current term in jail.

I do applaud Chairman Stallings though for standing up. How the liberal blogosphere’s going to like it is anyone’s guess.
